About Amani Participatory Theatre
Amani Participatory Theatre is the creative heartbeat of CCSC. It is a youth-led collective using performance, storytelling, and lived experience to spark dialogue and inspire meaningful change across Uganda.
Our Approach
At Amani Participatory Theatre, we believe that meaningful change begins within individuals and grows through collective action. Our sessions are designed to be interactive, reflective, and rooted in real-life experiences. By using role play, storytelling, movement, and group dialogue, we create safe and accessible spaces where participants can explore sensitive issues without fear of judgment. These creative methods allow young people to connect beyond social differences, develop empathy, and strengthen mutual respect. Through this process, participants gain not only artistic skills but also confidence, resilience, and critical thinking. Our approach transforms theatre into a tool for healing, learning, and empowerment, ensuring that communities can imagine new possibilities together.
Our Mission
Our mission is to engage communities on pressing social issues and nurture individuals who become agents of positive social change. We are committed to creating opportunities where young people are not only sensitized to the realities around them but also equipped with the tools to take meaningful and responsible action. By combining creativity with advocacy, we empower participants to challenge assumptions, share their voices, and build confidence in expressing themselves. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every individual has the potential to inspire transformation. Through workshops, performances, and dialogue, we cultivate leaders who drive equity, inclusion, and resilience, ensuring that communities thrive together.
Our Vision
We envision a society where dignity, diversity, and self-expression are valued, and where every individual feels empowered to contribute without fear of exclusion. Our vision is to build communities where voices are heard, differences respected, and shared experiences lead to deeper understanding. Through Amani Participatory Theatre, we strive to create spaces that celebrate diversity and foster unity. We believe that creativity is a powerful bridge, connecting people across divides and inspiring empathy. By amplifying unheard voices and encouraging dialogue, we aim to shape a future where communities are stronger, inclusive, and resilient. Our vision is not just about performance — it is about transformation and lasting social change.
What We Do
Through Amani Participatory Theatre, communities actively shape stories that address pressing social challenges. Our participatory approach ensures individuals are not passive spectators but active contributors. By combining performance, dialogue, and lived experience, we create safe spaces where voices are heard, empathy is built, and meaningful change begins.
HIV & AIDS Awareness
We promote prevention, encourage treatment, and reduce stigma through open dialogue and storytelling. By dramatizing real experiences, our theatre workshops empower communities to confront misconceptions, foster compassion, and support healthier practices. This creative approach builds trust and strengthens resilience against HIV/AIDS challenges.
Public Health
Our performances raise awareness about healthcare access and strengthen community engagement in health systems. Through interactive theatre, participants explore barriers to care, share lived experiences, and co‑create solutions. This participatory model builds confidence, encourages dialogue, and promotes healthier, more inclusive communities.
Nutrition
We address food and nutrition challenges by promoting healthier practices through creative expression. Theatre becomes a tool to highlight local struggles, encourage sustainable solutions, and inspire families to adopt better habits. By combining storytelling with education, we empower communities to improve nutrition and strengthen food security.
Peacebuilding
Amani creates safe spaces to discuss domestic violence, tribalism, and interethnic conflict. Through role play and dialogue, participants explore causes, share perspectives, and imagine reconciliation. This process fosters empathy, understanding, and unity, helping communities move beyond division toward peace and collective healing.
Theatre of the Oppressed
Amani Participatory Theatre draws inspiration from Augusto Boal’s globally recognized method, which redefines theatre as a space for dialogue, reflection, and collective action. Unlike traditional performance, this approach transforms audiences into active participants.
Empowering Exploration
At Amani, this method is used to explore pressing social issues in ways that feel accessible and empowering. Through role play, storytelling, and improvisation, participants confront real-life challenges such as inequality, stigma, and conflict. By embodying different perspectives, they gain empathy, confidence, and the ability to imagine alternative futures.
A Tool for Transformation
Theatre of the Oppressed is more than art — it is a tool for transformation. It helps communities break free from limiting patterns, build resilience, and discover new ways of relating to one another. This participatory process encourages dialogue that goes beyond discussion, moving people toward meaningful action.
For Amani, adopting this approach means creating safe spaces where creativity becomes a bridge. It allows unheard voices to rise, fosters deeper understanding, and inspires collective solutions. By blending performance with activism, we empower young people to become storytellers, advocates, and changemakers.
Why It Matters
In a world shaped by division, misunderstanding, and inequality, creativity becomes a powerful bridge that connects people across differences. Amani Participatory Theatre recognizes that communities thrive when voices are valued, stories are shared, and empathy is cultivated.
Our work matters because it amplifies voices that are often unheard, giving young people and marginalized groups the confidence to express themselves. By dramatizing real experiences, we transform abstract challenges into relatable stories that inspire action on health, nutrition, and peacebuilding.
Theatre and expressive arts allow communities to see each other differently, fostering understanding where division once existed. Every performance is an opportunity to build trust, strengthen resilience, and spark collective solutions.
At Amani, we believe that lasting change is created together. Each session contributes to a future where communities are stronger, diversity is celebrated, and shared experiences lead to meaningful transformation.
